William Edwards, the son of a London silversmith, migrated to Melbourne in 1857 and became a leading supplier of silverware, both imported and made in his workshop. He worked from premises at Collins Street East, until about 1876 and ran a business in Melbourne which supplied silverware to major retailers until about 1872. He made a number of large presentation pieces incorporating Emu eggs. He also produced a lot of sporting cups and trophies.

This example is a cup that was presented at the Melbourne Regatta. The first organised rowing regatta was staged in Tasmania on Hobart's Derwent River on January 5, 1827. Annual regattas began in Melbourne in 1862. This one was presented for the Grand Challenge Cup Race in 1870. It has engraved decorations including wreaths and garlands. It is in good condition, just a few small dings and a slight wobble.

Stamped to based 'W EDWARDS MANUFACTURER MELBOURNE', and stamped to side with the Royal Warrant for the Duke of Edinburgh.

It measures just under 19cm high and weighs 234 grams.
