Collection: Women Silversmiths

One area that we had always had an interest in is Women Silversmiths. Often the widows or daughters of silversmiths, these resilient women would take over the business after the silversmith had died. Up until the last quarter of the eighteenth century, in England they would often register their maker’s mark in the widow’s diamond shape. In France, they would have the letter V incorporated into the mark (veuve is the French word for widow). A collecting area in their own right, their work can be found through the centuries and from a number of locations.
