Collection: Channel Islands Silver
The Channel Islands are a group of self-governing British Crown Dependencies located in the English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, France, and are not part of the United Kingdom. This archipelago includes the major islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark, along with numerous smaller islands. Historically, they are the remnants of the Duchy of Normandy, a possession of William the Conqueror, and have maintained a distinct identity and administration with unique laws and customs.
Channel Islands silver is most commonly from Jersey or Guernsey, notable for their distinct maker's marks and lack of standardised hallmarks due to the absence of a formal assay office. The historical output of silver reflected the islands' unique economic and sociological development, with much of the work showing French influence. Spoons are the most common silver found, although christening cups are reasonably common as well.
