Collection: Cape/South African

South African silversmithing has a rich history, evolving from early Cape silver work influenced by European styles to the development of a uniquely South African style, particularly in the 20th century. The industry has been shaped by both local craftsmanship and the availability of precious metals, like gold and diamonds, which have played a significant role in the jewellry trade. Silversmithing at the Cape of Good Hope, particularly in the late 17th to mid-19th centuries, was heavily influenced by European styles, with silversmiths trained in those traditions. Cape silver of this period is often found with pseudo hallmarks.
