William Edwards, the son of a London silversmith, migrated to Melbourne in 1857 and became a leading supplier of silverware, both imported and made in his workshop. He worked from premises at Collins Street East, until about 1876 and ran a business in Melbourne which supplied silverware to major retailers until about 1872. He made a number of large presentation pieces incorporating Emu eggs. He also produced a lot of sporting cups and trophies.
This example is a cup that was presented at the Melbourne Regatta. The first organised rowing regatta was staged in Tasmania on Hobart's Derwent River on January 5, 1827. Annual regattas began in Melbourne in 1862. This one it not dated but was presented for the Grand Challenge Cup Race in 1869. It has engraved decorations including scroll work and a greek key pattern around the rim. It is in good condition, just a few small dings.
