Collection: Australian Hallmarking System
A relatively short-lived 'hallmarking' system was run in Australia in the 1920s and 1930s. It was opt in, but was governed by a system including a silver stand mark (blue wren) and a gold standard mark (kookaburra). Although plans included all states, it appears only Victoria and New South Wales had active jewellers and silversmiths using the system. Prouds is the most common maker found, but other examples are around. The records for the Sydney branch have been published as a book. It is unknown currently what happened to the Victorian records.
Examples are collectable in their own right and command a premium on similar pieces.
