Henry Steiner was born in Rodenberg, near Hanover, Germany in 1835. He immigrated to Adelaide in 1858, and set up his business in 1860, on Rundle Street; same street as Matthias Joachim Wendt. Although Wendt produced the largest amount of silver, Steiner was also quite prolific. Sadly, in 1883, Steiner experienced the loss of his wife and two children from typhoid – a disease which arrived on the continent along with settlement. This led to Steiner selling his business and returning to Germany in the following year.

This example of his work is a wine goblet, with extensive grape and vine decoration engraved on it. It is in very good condition, but does have a slight wobble.

Stamped 'H.STEINER' and pseudo hallmarks of Queens head and Lion Passant.

It measures 15.5cm tall and weighs 145 grams.
